Taare Zameen Par

The film Taare Zameen Par, set in Mumbai’s bustling culture where mental handicaps go unrecognized, highlights the importance of utilizing a holistic bio-psycho-social-cultural model in approaching our patients and families. This heart-warming story pays homage to two themes – that it only takes one person to see things differently and to transform the life of a child; and, indeed, each child is special. Participants gain an understanding of the prevalence of learning disorders and comorbidities and the impact that these disorders have on individuals and families. The film offers a cultural context around which these disorders may be recognized or unrecognized, and highlights the various ways of understanding illness based on cultural context. Child and adolescent psychiatrists need the ability to think through the cultural context and come up with targeted interventions that are likely to succeed.
