Member Services Forum 11 (open to all AACAP members)
West Side Story: Bridging the Gap Between Faith-Based Leaders and Mental Health Professionals in the African American Community

African Americans underutilize mental health services, instead seeking help for emotional and behavioral issues from their spiritual leaders at a high rate. The stigma associated with psychiatry and mental health providers among faith leaders often leads to discord between the two groups. Mental health providers must understand the impact spiritual leaders have and how that affects their patients’ care. To better understand how to manage patients with the assistance of their spiritual leaders, this Members Services Forum explores innovative ways to engage faith-based communities, and methods to address stigma and misconceptions about psychiatric treatment. Join the discussion on how to combine forces with spiritual leaders to assist patients in obtaining optimal care.
