The covert or “hidden” ethics curriculum is ever present, but rarely addressed, in child and adolescent psychiatry training programs. This CCC focuses directly on the negative messages transmitted in the “hidden curriculum,” which promote acceptable—in contrast to ethical—professional behavior. Participants, both residents and faculty, openly discuss a variety of ethical considerations that underlie desirable resident and faculty conduct and their application during the course of training. In the process, they become aware of factors that contribute to an atmosphere that promotes collegiality, and learn about ethics and educational resources that endorse and encourage the creation of openness between faculty and residents. Discussion provides an opportunity to take positive steps toward the goal of making the covert, overt.
