In "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," Lisbeth Salander, manifests numerous areas of
DSM-5 defined psychopathology. The Swedish film adaptation of the book was released in 2009 and expertly presents developmental precursors to the adult manifestations of her disorders. Selected pivotal excerpts from the film are presented. They focus discussion on 1) understanding the social psychological significance of Lisbeth’s tattoos and body piercings, especially as they relate to concepts of beauty and body image in youth in contemporary Western societies and 2) demonstrate the traumatic events suffered as a child, adolescent, and young adult and how they influenced her subsequent personality and pathology. Commentary is provided from the fields of psychiatry, psychology, sociology, and contemporary culture.
