Child and adolescent psychiatrists are frequently asked to assess and manage children and adolescents that make violent threats. Thus, can benefit from knowing how youth differ significantly from adults with respect to how often they make threats, for what reasons, and how they express their aggressive intentions. Through discussion of case examples, participants in this CCC become familiar with the prevalence, risk factors, and etiological framework for understanding violent threats, learn about different methods of violence assessment, and gain understanding of benefits of various assessment methods. The best practices of risk assessment of violent threats and their limitations are discussed. Strategies to promote prevention and a more responsive system of care are also addressed.
