Catatonia is often under-recognized, leading to a lack of treatment and the potential for increased morbidity and mortality. A systematic approach to assessing high-risk patients can improve outcomes. This Workshop demonstrates the diagnostic process used when assessing children and adolescents for catatonia through the use of videos and live demonstrations. Attendees become familiar with underlying causes of catatonia and the necessary work-up needed to identify the etiology in the pediatric population; learn to assess the symptoms of catatonia and to administer and score the Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Scale in various clinical scenarios; and discuss the latest recommended interventions in the treatment of catatonia, including psychopharmacological agents and electroconvulsive therapy.
