Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is included in the
DSM-5, but the diagnosis is often poorly understood and clinicians benefit from increasing their ability to recognize and address the problem in their practice. In China, internet addiction has long been recognized as a valid diagnosis and major public health problem. The documentary
Web Junkie follows three Chinese adolescents being treated for gaming addiction in a residential treatment center in Beijing, China; sharing their stories, as well as those of their families and treatment providers. The film provides a basis to discuss 1) IGD diagnosis, epidemiology, and treatment; 2) cultural differences in psychiatric practices between China and the United States; and 3) international gamer culture.
