The movie
X-Men: First Class serves as the stimulus for discussion of “geek culture,” the reasons for its increasing appeal with children and adolescents, and current and future clinical applications for psychiatrists. The film successfully showcases the way “geek culture” media portrays common developmental conflicts that resonate with younger audiences (such as family of origin issues, trauma or loss, bullying, and identity formation) in the context of fantastical mythology and storylines. Attendees gain a general understanding of cinematherapy through examples from the movie, as well as its uses in clinical practice when teaching psychological concepts and interventions; receive information regarding superhero therapy; and identify new, promising geek therapy models for consideration and future research.
