Recurrent military deployments take an emotional toll on soldiers and their families. There is a growing body of literature demonstrating the emotional and behavioral impact this places on children and adolescents in military families. The 2014 film
Fort Bliss illustrates some of these challenges through the story of a military mother returning from Afghanistan; tracing her attempts to reestablish a relationship with her pre-school-aged son and then facing the prospect of another unanticipated deployment.
Fort Bliss is an effective dramatic representation of many of the difficult dilemmas faced by military families. Through discussion of this film, attendees increase awareness of special concerns related to repeated military deployments.
