Somatic Symptom Disorders: Update on Diagnosis and Treatment
Somatization denotes the conscious or unconscious tendency to use somatic metaphors to convey emotions that are difficult to express directly. Somatization is a universal coping mechanism, but can become pathologically overused, leading to symptom formation. The prognosis for any patient with a somatic symptom disorder is influenced by a variety of factors, including the nature, chronicity, and severity of the underlying psychopathology and of contributory external stressors; the intrinsic strengths and resilience of the patient; and the effectiveness of the patient’s support system. Better understanding of the pathophysiology of somatic symptom disorders and the available evidence-based treatments for their management can improve clinician efficacy in this challenging domain.
