As child and adolescent psychiatrists see increasing numbers of preschoolers with disruptive behaviors, it is important to be familiar with evidence-based psychosocial treatment options before initiating medication treatments. Parent–child interaction therapy (PCIT) is based on research that demonstrates the importance of parents meeting young children’s dual needs for nurturance and for limits. Workshop participants gain a thorough understanding of PCIT, an evidence-based treatment shown to produce clinically significant improvements in disruptive behaviors and the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms of preschoolers. Assessment procedures and treatment components are demonstrated through videos and role-play.
