Children and adolescents who are gender nonconforming and dysphoric, and their families, face specific challenges in the clinical setting. Distinct from issues around sexual orientation, a child or adolescent with nonconforming expressions of gender has unique risk factors that may include severe stigma, bullying, and rejection, which affect identity development and self-esteem. At this CCB, child and adolescent psychiatrists gain a detailed understanding of the complex issues across developmental contexts; learn about current interventions for youth who are gender nonconforming and dysphoric; explore practical strategies to use when approaching assessment and treatment of youth presenting with gender-related issues; and learn how different systems within mental health may impact treatment of these youth.
