The back and forth interactions between parent and infant facilitate the infant’s developing sense of self and shared meaning. The essential ingredient is thought to be the parent’s capacity for reflective functioning: the ability to understand one’s own behavior and the behavior of others. Clinical vignettes and videos illustrating reflective functioning enhancing techniques help develop an understanding of the concept of reflective functioning capacity and its relevance to parent–child psychotherapy with preschool children. Several therapeutic techniques are covered, and how improving parental reflective functioning can translate into better outcomes for both the parent and preschool child is discussed. Participants have the opportunity to submit case material for discussion.
