Member Forum (open to all AACAP members)
Practice in the World of Medication Oversight
The utilization of psychotropic medications and concurrent prescription of two or more psychotropic medications (polypharmacy) in the treatment of children and adolescents has increased dramatically over the past two decades. Concern over the high cost of psychotropic medication, and concerns regarding appropriateness and safety of these agents have prompted the development of various types of prospective and retrospective psychotropic medication review programs. This Member Forum discusses the rationale behind psychotropic medication oversight strategies; discusses the safety, clinical appropriateness, and cost concerns involved; describes various strategies to monitor the appropriateness of use of these medications and enhance cost effectiveness; and discusses the impact of oversight and cost containment strategies on patients and clinicians.
