Neurostimulation in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: ECT, TMS, and tDCS
Noninvasive brain stimulation modalities such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have utility for the study and treatment of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents and may have certain advantages over pharmacotherapy. Several important considerations in the transition of these technologies from the adult population have to be considered before they are routinely used in the child and adolescent population. This session focuses on the safety and development of TMS and tDCS for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disease in children and adolescents. Current literature on the safety of TMS and tDCS are reviewed, state-of-the-art developments in the application of TMS and tDCS are discussed, and planning for future data collection and longitudinal outcome studies is proposed.
