Kinyarwanda is a movie presentation about the genocide that occurred in Rwanda in 1994 and the road to recovery that has occurred since. It provides the context for discussing violent trauma in children and families. With the increase in refugees running from violence and terror, child and adolescent psychiatrists are increasingly in need of understanding what powers culture and religion have to inflict trauma and guilt, but also what power they may have to provide forgiveness and reconciliation. This presentation addresses the importance of considering forgiveness in the context of cultural, religious, and spiritual worldviews, and how it can contribute to the process of recovery. Attendees will be better prepared to address the mental health needs of immigrant victims of trauma.
