The duration of untreated psychosis is one of the major modifiable risk factors for poor prognosis in psychotic disorders. Additionally, a substantial proportion of acts of violence committed by individuals with psychosis occur during the first episode of the illness. To decrease the duration of untreated psychosis and acts of violence, it is important to increase clinicians’ awareness so they are better able to recognize early signs of psychosis in adolescents, including evaluation of important prognostic indicators, as well as when to order extra testing, methods of assessing risk of violence in early psychosis, and knowledge of the demographics of early psychosis and violence.
