Making use of dreams, fantasies, metaphors, favorite songs, and cultural events, child and adolescent psychiatrists can help teens and young adults enhance their understanding of themselves and their unfelt/unexpressed/unacceptable feelings and thoughts. This CCB introduces the important addition this can make in a treatment plan and discusses how to help teens and young adults use new personal insights to develop adaptive ways of dealing with problems such as anxiety, depression, conflicts, and relationships. Clinicians explore ways of incorporating these techniques into their treatment plans with the goal of enabling youth to more freely express themselves and find healthier ways of coping with stressful situations.
