This Workshop provides child and adolescent psychiatrists a working knowledge of public school law and its applications as a basis to effectively advocate for the needs of their patients in schools. The historical evolution of regular education law, special education law, civil rights law, and disability law is described. The essential components of the December 2015 revision of Regular Education Law under “Every Student Succeeds” and the implications of this legislation are discussed. Attendees can better advocate for their patients and more constructively collaborate with school officials, administrators, and teachers by understanding the basis for the rights of students, the obligations of schools to provide “free and appropriate education,” the limits to these obligations, and common fiscal realities that influence school decisions.
