The death of a parent is one of the most significant losses a child and family can experience. Children respond to death in a manner that is closely tied to their age because understanding the concept of death develops in stages over time as a child grows. This CCC provides information on how a child’s grief reactions and bereavement process differ from that of adults and are dependent on the age of the child. Three clinical cases provide examples of common symptoms and reactions exhibited by preschoolers, school-aged children, and adolescents. Factors to consider when assessing a bereaved child, such as time since the death, family and surviving parental functioning, cause of death, and developmental age are discussed, along with the factors shown to be associated with better and poorer outcomes.
