Beasts of No Nation: A Movie About the Emotional Journey of an Innocent Boy to Child Soldier
The movie, Beasts of No Nation, portrays the life of a vibrant, playful child who enjoys a secure and happy life in a stable family in Western Africa prior to the outbreak of war in his community. With the onset of armed conflict, he experiences separation from his mother and younger sibling followed by many horrifying traumas, including being forced to commit horrendous acts of warfare. The movie demonstrates the psychological and physical factors that contribute to the transformation of young, innocent children into guerilla soldiers. Attendees gain an understanding of the intense physical and sexual violence to which child soldiers are exposed, both as victims and as perpetrators, with consequential long-term physical and mental health sequelae. Discussion includes the far-reaching psychological effects of using children as soldiers on the children, their families, communities, and the adult soldiers who are confronted by these children in armed conflict.
