When disasters and traumatic community events occur, the media often calls upon child and adolescent psychiatrists to provide information that is helpful to children and families. This Workshop provides child and adolescent psychiatrists with insight into providing interviews to print, radio, web, and television journalists, including how to work with journalists prior to the interview to define the parameters of the discussion. Participants learn about public risk communication before an anticipated disaster; understand how best to communicate during an impromptu interview by a member of the press around a recent traumatic event; and get a journalist’s perspective on covering a disaster and what information journalists are seeking. Participating in mock interviews better prepares child and adolescents psychiatrists for their media encounters.
