Parent behavioral management training (PBMT) is widely considered one of the most effective interventions in the treatment of problem behaviors in children and adolescents with internalizing and externalizing behaviors, as well as autism spectrum disorders, learning problems, and intellectual disabilities. It has also been associated with positive changes in family systems. This Workshop identifies core principles of PBMT and demonstrates how parents can be taught to use the core principles, including developmentally appropriate expectations, positive reinforcement, problem-solving strategies, selective ignoring, and natural consequences, to address behavioral problems; and discusses how to incorporate these principles in the child’s daily routine to enhance parental attention and reduce power struggles.
