Ponette is a beautiful illustration of grief in a 4-year-old girl following the sudden loss of her mother and temporary departure of her emotionally unavailable father. The film is portrayed from the perspective of 4-year-old Ponette, who goes through stages of confusion, anger, isolation, bargaining, despair, and more in her journey through the grieving process. Grief in children is a complex process influenced by the circumstances of the loss, the child’s individual temperament and personality, and psychosocial support surrounding the loss. Attendees learn to appreciate varied and complex manifestations of grief across cultures and evidence-based approaches to building resilience. The role child and adolescent psychiatrists may play in the bereavement process and the importance of attending to counter transference concerns are discussed.
