The French film,
Tomboy, explores childhood gender development through the lens of 10-year-old Laure who wants to be a boy and passes as a boy named Mikael to the children in her new neighborhood. Given the increase in children and adolescents presenting with gender dysphoria, it is important for child and adolescent psychiatrists to closely explore their beliefs and attitudes concerning gender to better help these patients.
Tomboy provides insight into the minds of children who experience a mismatch between their preferred gender and their bodies. Participants gain a better understanding of childhood gender identity development and how gender dysphoria manifests in different age groups; review biological and psychological etiologies for gender dysphoria; explore different treatment options available for youth and their outcomes; and better appreciate the impact culture may have on development of gender.
