EXTENDED WORKSHOPS are full-day programs, 6-8 hours in duration. Extended Workshops provide additional time and opportunity to master evidence-based therapeutic interventions beyond what is possible in the standard 3-hour Workshop. At its conclusion, participants in an Extended Workshop should have gained sufficient expertise to implement newly learned treatment approaches or interventions into their clinical practices. Suitable topics for Extended Workshops are those in which additional time for practicing new clinical skills would significantly enhance participants’ learning experience, and might address topics such as approaches to parent training, organizational skills training, various forms of cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, mindfulness approaches, mentalization, or other psychosocial interventions. Extended Workshops can have a maximum of 40 participants.

Extended Workshops should address the theory, evidence-base, and clinical skills relevant to the program topic, and provide sufficient opportunity to learn and practice associated techniques. Active audience participation in hands-on, focused learning and skill practice is essential. Use of handouts, multi-media (such as video and slide presentations), treatment manuals, and role-play are highly encouraged.

Submissions should clearly describe the program agenda with a precise outline of how the day is organized. Provide clear educational goals and indicate how the Extended Workshop will achieve these goals. Clearly specify the roles and contributions of each presenter. Provide a clear description of the method of teaching that will be used as well as a specific description of teaching materials (e.g. video clips, evidence-based treatment manuals, handouts, rating scales, etc.). Submissions should include a brief description of or reference to the scientific evidence for and limitations of the treatment technique.

Participants purchase a ticket to attend an Extended Workshop. The emphasis should be on hands-on acquisition of new clinical skills. This should not merely be a didactic presentation or academic review. Extended Workshops have a maximum of 4 presenters. A cast of thousands just doesn’t work.

The Program chair may claim up to $125 for reimbursement for the cost of copying handout materials (receipts must be submitted). Presenters will also have the ability to upload their presentation materials to AACAP's website before the meeting for registered participants. All accepted submissions must display full disclosure slides to the audience. Approximately 8 spaces are available for Extended Workshops.

The following information is required:

  • The title of the submission
  • The chair’s organization and email address
  • Educational learning objectives
  • Review Abstract for the entire Workshop
  • Proceedings Abstract for the entire Workshop
  • Names, organizations, contact information, email addresses, and disclosure of conflicts of affiliation for all co-presenters
