SYMPOSIA are data-driven presentations that address different aspects of a research topic or differing views of the same topic; often concluded by a discussant summary. Symposia are similar to Clinical Perspectives. While Clinical Perspectives may be more impressionistic and convey content based on the “art” and wisdom of clinical practice, Symposia comprise individual presentations of original research. Symposia are organized around a common theme and provide an opportunity for discussion by experts who approach an issue from slightly different, but complementary perspectives, or discussion of a controversial topic by experts with differing views. It is the recommendation of the Program Committee that presenters come from different institutions. However if all speakers are from the same site, then a discussant from another site should be included.

Symposia are 2.5 hours in duration and ideally consist of 4 individual presentations, each approximately 20-25 minutes long, with additional time utilized as needed for a discussant summary, participant questions, and open discussion. Depending on the topic, the Program Committee will at times consider submissions that consist of only 3 individual presentations. Although not required, the Program Committee looks favorably on inclusion of an independent discussant able to integrate and critique individual presentations and summarize clinical implications of research findings, particularly if information presented is new or controversial. The session chair is responsible for insuring that the amount of individual presentation content is appropriate for the available timeframe and for keeping speakers on schedule. Symposia have a maximum of 6 participants, including chair and discussant.

All accepted submissions must display full disclosure slides to the audience. Submissions about clinical techniques should include a brief description of or reference to the scientific evidence for and limitations of the treatment technique. Approximately 50 Symposia spaces are available.
