Adam: A Hollywood Portrayal of Asperger’s Disorder
In Adam, the life of brilliant but socially awkward Adam is seen through the eyes of Beth, his beautiful “neurotypical” neighbor. The story unfolds as Beth, an elementary school teacher, finds herself inexplicably drawn to Adam, who she initially views as odd but charming. She eventually finds out that he has Asperger’s Disorder. Through the course of the film, Adam and Beth engage in an unlikely courtship, resulting in mutual self discovery. The film highlights the journey that Adam takes in attempting to develop a meaningful relationship after the loss of his primary caregiver, his father. It elegantly highlights the unique challenges for individuals with Asperger’s Disorder and the people who care for them. In this Media Theatre presentation, Adam serves as a discussion stimulus for the difficulties encountered by individuals who have Asperger's and are high functioning in certain areas, but encounter great difficulties in life adjustment.
