Selective Mutism (SM) is a psychiatric condition in which children are capable of speech but are reluctant to speak in a number of social situations outside of home—most commonly at school. As a result, SM causes significant interference in academic and social functions. This Workshop provides the clinician with key assessment tools and an approach to the management and treatment of SM. Clinicians gain an understanding of SM and the importance of developing a multi-modal treatment approach. Psycho-education, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), school interventions, and pharmacotherapy are discussed. Important modifications to traditional CBT that prove beneficial in the treatment of children with SM are demonstrated.
