Workshop 31 (ticket)
Cultural Competence: An Experiential Approach through the Eyes of African Americans
This Workshop explores alternative methods of learning and teaching about cultural competence; the persistence of racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare and the role that individual practitioners’ prejudices and stereotypes may contribute to these disparities; the role that cultural competency and “race consciousness” can play in helping decrease these disparities; and how film, literature, and music can be used to effectively teach cultural competency and help practitioners better treat their patients. Excerpts from selected works of music, film, and literature are shown in parallel with historical information. Exercises explore practitioners’ racial identity, attitudes, and biases. Participants increase their understanding of African Americans and learn more about their own underlying assumptions and how those assumptions may impact their engagement with minority groups.
