Prevention of the Use of Restraint and Seclusion
There is increasing consensus among clinicians, health care administrators, mental health care policy makers, and regulators that seclusion and restraint carry adverse consequences; and there is now a consistent attempt by some state mental health authorities and psychiatric facilities across the United States to decrease the use of restraint and seclusion. This SIG presents basic approaches to creating a restraint prevention initiative and provides a forum to explore recent best practices preventing the use of restraint and seclusion. Participants have a venue to discuss challenges and successful strategies to prevent the use of restraint and seclusion in clinical settings, including inpatient, residential treatment, schools, and juvenile justice settings.
