The number of children and adolescents experiencing commercial sexual exploitation in the United States is estimated to be as high as 300,000. Clinicians need to know how to address these youths. In this Workshop, child and adolescent psychiatrists and other mental health providers learn how to implement an evidence-based treatment, trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), which is effective for treating youth who have experienced sexual exploitation. Topics covered include engaging commercially exploited youth in treatment; involving overwhelmed or disengaged caregivers in treatment to enhance the youth’s safety and trust; managing serious and dangerous behaviors, e.g., running away; and implementing the trauma narration and processing component with these youths.
