Workshop (ticket)
Mental Health Impact on Immigrants and Refugees
Recent studies indicate immigration to be a risk factor for developing mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, and substance use disorder, and also show that immigrants are more reluctant to seek medical care than the general population. As child and adolescent psychiatrists, it is important to know the challenges children and adolescents face when they immigrate to the United States and to acquire adequate tools to screen for mental health problems in this population. This Workshop educates and empowers participants to recognize the need for psychiatric care in the pediatric immigrant and refugee population; looks at current policies and available resources; and discusses the need for policies and guidance for physicians to better address refugees' physical and mental health needs.
