Restraint prevention and reduction initiatives have been started in many individual programs and institutions, in many states, and in a number of countries worldwide. The prevention and reduction of aggressive behavior, and of restraint and seclusion, are major priorities in many child and adolescent psychiatric institutions, including inpatient units and residential treatment settings. Attendees gain awareness of changes in philosophy and practice regarding the use of restraint and seclusion; learn about best practices and an approach to creating a restraint prevention initiative; and discuss successful strategies, as well as difficult challenges, in preventing the use of restraint and seclusion in various clinical settings and inpatient psychiatry units, residential facilities, detention centers, group homes, and therapeutic day schools.
